Surrendering What We Don’t Really Want

This morning, these lyrics from Rich Mullins’ “Hold Me Jesus” stood out to me:

Surrender don’t come natural to me
I’d rather fight You for something
I don’t really want
Than to take what You give that I need
And I’ve beat my head against so many walls
Now I’m falling down, I’m falling on my knees

Why do we fight for what we don’t really want so often? Why do we waste time on things that distract us from our real passions and interests?

God, I want to take what You give that I need instead of battling for so many unnecessary things.
